Sisters: An Artistic Project Turning Illness Into a Call for Solidarity

Laval artist Sophie Chainel will present Sisters, an immersive multidisciplinary exhibition exploring the often overlooked issue of bias between women. The event will take place on December 12 and 13 at the Tiers Lieu de Laval, offering visitors a sensory experience built around themes of resilience, vulnerability and solidarity.

Chainel created the project after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis in 2024. Two days later, she was scheduled to perform on stage and chose to sing Zombie, a song she had interpreted in her youth. According to Chainel, the moment became a turning point that sparked a renewed creative direction, shaping what would become Sisters.

The exhibition combines black-and-white photography, haikus, original songs and music, an immersive installation, and guided conversations on the theme of bias between women. Each piece is built around a single word associated with strength, vulnerability or transformation. As a whole, the exhibition aims to encourage reflection on the ways women perceive one another across differences of identity, appearance, motherhood, culture and experience.

Chainel explains that Sisters highlights forms of bias that can influence women’s personal and professional paths, noting that the project seeks to spark dialogue on equity and solidarity.

To support breast cancer awareness, 10 percent of all sales including tickets, albums and posters purchased before December 13 will be donated to Ruban Rose – Fondation du cancer du sein du Québec.
