Laval-based charity School Is Loud, known in French as L’École fait du Bruit, has joined UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy Alliance, an international network focused on strengthening media and information literacy.

The organization announced on August 17 that its membership became effective this month, shortly after School Is Loud obtained registered charity status in Canada.

Through school journalism, radio and podcasting projects, the organization works with young people on skills including source verification, critical thinking, interviewing and responsible media production.

Students learn through media production

Founded in Laval, School Is Loud places students in media-production environments where they research topics, verify information, prepare interviews, speak publicly and produce their own content.

According to the organization, its educational approach also addresses artificial intelligence, digital citizenship, privacy, representation and media ethics.

“Media creation is a way to put young people into action: investigating, verifying, questioning and publishing responsibly. The work gives them the habits they need to better understand the world and engage with confidence,” said Kostas Eleftheriou, founder and executive director of School Is Loud.

The organization says joining the UNESCO alliance will provide an international framework to exchange practices and share its experience with organizations working in media literacy in Quebec, elsewhere in Canada and internationally.

Journalism and radio projects in schools

Over the past year, School Is Loud has continued deploying its Studio in a Box initiative in schools while supporting student-run journalism clubs.

Students participating in the programs can take part in different stages of media production, including research, production and hosting.

The organization also produces 450 Décibels, a weekly live radio program broadcast on CISM 89.3 FM. The program provides a platform for student work and includes live studio interviews with elected officials and community representatives.

School Is Loud has also brought its activities outside the classroom, including through L’École fait du Vroom, presented at the Montreal International Auto Show.

Organization receives entrepreneurship recognition

The organization has also participated in several entrepreneurship programs and competitions in recent years.

According to information provided by School Is Loud, it was selected as an impact startup at Web Summit Vancouver in 2025 and received the national OSEntreprendre award in the Social Economy category.

Its founder was also recognized among 25 emerging Montreal entrepreneurs at C2 Montréal in 2025.

More recently, School Is Loud was selected as one of 50 finalists in Entreprendre ici’s Bourses d’honneur program in August 2026.

From Laval schools to an international network

School Is Loud is a registered Canadian charity based in Laval. Its programs use journalism, radio, podcasting and other forms of media creation as educational tools for young people.

With its membership in UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy Alliance now effective, the organization says it intends to continue developing its school journalism initiatives while contributing to discussions and exchanges on media literacy beyond Laval.
