Laval coalition on domestic and sexual violence backs “Communautaire à boutte” movement
The Table de concertation en violence conjugale et agressions à caractère sexuel de Laval (TCVCASL) has announced its support for the “Communautaire à boutte” movement, citing concerns about what it describes as chronic underfunding of Quebec’s community sector.
The position was recently confirmed by the TCVCASL’s board of directors and made public on August 24.
According to the Laval organization, community groups play an important role within the health and social services network, particularly in responding to domestic and sexual violence.
Movement calls for increased mission-based funding
“Communautaire à boutte” brings together community organizations from across Quebec seeking to draw attention to funding pressures affecting the sector.
According to the TCVCASL, the movement is calling for increased core mission funding that better reflects community needs and conditions experienced by organizations on the ground.
The TCVCASL says community organizations are being asked to provide services while facing financial pressures and increasing demand.
“We share the observation that it is difficult to build effective integrated models on a weakened community network,” the organization stated.
The TCVCASL also expressed support for prioritizing funding for organizations’ overall missions rather than relying primarily on temporary or project-specific initiatives.
These statements reflect the position adopted by the TCVCASL and the demands associated with the “Communautaire à boutte” movement.
TCVCASL says it is also affected
The organization noted that it is itself a community organization and therefore directly affected by the funding issues raised by the movement.
The TCVCASL works through an intersectoral approach involving organizations and partners concerned with domestic violence and sexual assault in Laval.
As part of its position, the organization says it intends to publicly express its solidarity and share information about the movement with its members, partners and the general public.
It also plans to relay information related to the campaign while maintaining what it describes as a collaborative approach consistent with its role as a consultation table.
Information session planned for September 22
The TCVCASL will hold a virtual information session on September 22 for its members.
According to the organization, the session will provide information about the movement, its demands and the challenges currently being reported by Laval’s community sector.
The TCVCASL also plans to incorporate a message of solidarity into some of its communications tools.
The organization says it intends to maintain a “unifying posture” as it supports the movement, in keeping with its intersectoral consultation mandate.
