Communauto FLEX launches in Pont-Viau near Cartier metro
Laval residents now have access to a new car-sharing option in Pont-Viau, with Communauto FLEX launching near the Cartier metro station.
The City of Laval and Communauto announced the service on October 22, presenting it as a complement to public transit, walking, cycling and the company’s existing station-based car-sharing service.
No reservation or return to the starting point
Unlike station-based car sharing, FLEX allows users to take a vehicle without a prior reservation and leave it in an authorized parking space within the FLEX zone at the end of the trip.
Vehicles can be located and accessed through the Communauto app.
According to the City, trips started in Laval can also end within FLEX zones in Montreal and Longueuil, subject to parking rules.
Communauto has operated station-based car sharing in Laval since 2010. The service currently has 37 stations and 58 vehicles in the city.
A new option near Cartier metro
The Pont-Viau sector was selected in part because of its proximity to the Cartier metro station and other transportation options.
Metro, buses, walking, cycling, station-based car sharing and FLEX are now available in the area.
“Already, more than 2,500 Laval residents have chosen to reduce their dependence on individual car ownership and adopt more sustainable transportation habits through Communauto,” said Pont-Viau city councillor and executive committee member Christine Poirier.
She said the FLEX service adds a more flexible car-sharing option for residents of Pont-Viau and Laval-des-Rapides.
Communauto expands its Laval service
Marco Viviani, Communauto’s vice-president of strategic development, said the launch represents an important step for the company in Laval.
“The proximity of Cartier station creates a particularly interesting context for car sharing,” he said, adding that FLEX can be used alongside public transit and other transportation modes.
Founded in Quebec City in 1994, Communauto operates car-sharing services in several Canadian cities and internationally.
The FLEX service is now available in Pont-Viau.
