Dr. Cécile Tremblay, a microbiologist and infectious disease specialist based at the CHUM hospital in Montreal, has been officially nominated as the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) candidate in the provincial riding of Sainte-Rose, which covers a section of northern Laval.

The nomination took place on April 20 in the presence of PLQ leader Charles Milliard and local party members, according to a press release issued by the party.

A career in infectious disease research and public health

Dr. Tremblay has worked as a clinician-researcher at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) for more than 20 years, specializing in microbiology and infectious diseases. She holds a medical degree and a specialty in microbiology and infectiology from the Université de Montréal, and completed a research fellowship in HIV at Harvard Medical School.

She became widely known to the Quebec public during the COVID-19 pandemic through frequent media appearances aimed at explaining the science behind the virus. The press release describes her as a leading figure in health-related science communication in Quebec.

Dr. Tremblay also served as director of the Public Health Laboratory and the FRQS Infectious Disease and AIDS Network, a role the party said demonstrates her ability to manage complex public health files and work with multidisciplinary teams.

Health care reform cited as motivation

In a statement included in the press release, Dr. Tremblay said her decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to improve Quebec’s health care system.

“After several years working in health care, I want to serve Quebecers differently: through politics,” she said, adding that the changes needed in the health system were her primary motivation for getting involved.

She also expressed confidence in the party’s leader. Milliard, a pharmacist by training, understands the day-to-day realities faced by health care workers across the province, according to Dr. Tremblay.

PLQ leader praises the nomination

Milliard praised the candidate’s background, noting her role during the pandemic. The party leader said her candidacy reflects the values of rigour and dedication to public service, qualities he considers essential for anyone seeking elected office.
