Quebec invests nearly $49 million in STL infrastructure projects
The Quebec government is providing $48.8 million to the Société de transport de Laval (STL) to support several infrastructure projects aimed at improving the city’s public transit network.
The funding was announced by Transport and Sustainable Mobility Minister Benoit Charette and Environment, Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks Minister Pascale Déry through the Government Assistance Program for Public Transit (PAGTCP).
According to the provincial government, the investment will help finance several initiatives, including the acquisition of onboard equipment for buses, monitoring work related to the expansion of an STL garage and the replacement of ventilation units.
Funding supports transit infrastructure
The PAGTCP provides financial assistance to public transit agencies for capital projects that maintain, improve or expand public transit and paratransit networks.
The program has a total budget of $1.58 billion for the 2025-2028 period.
According to the government, the funding supports projects that improve existing infrastructure while helping transit agencies modernize their operations.
Supporting sustainable transportation
In a statement, Charette said public transit plays an essential role in mobility and economic development across Quebec.
“We have decided to invest significant amounts in our public transit networks. In doing so, we will help move Quebec forward while showcasing our expertise in sustainable and safe transportation,” he said.
Déry said expanding public transit contributes to the province’s climate objectives by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through lower-carbon transportation options.
“Our government is proud to work alongside public transit organizations to build a better transportation network for everyone,” she said.
Investment welcomed for Laval
Christopher Skeete, MNA for Sainte-Rose and Quebec’s Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie, said the funding will improve transit services for Laval residents.
“Improving public transit directly improves the quality of life of Laval residents. This major investment will help provide more reliable and accessible services, making daily travel easier for families, students and workers while protecting our environment,” he said.
According to the government, the PAGTCP is part of Quebec’s 2030 Green Economy Plan and the Sustainable Mobility Policy 2030. The program aims to improve public transit infrastructure, support fleet electrification, increase service levels, enhance accessibility for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, encourage intermodal transportation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
