Asphalt removed to create greener play space at Chomedey daycare
Part of the outdoor yard at CPE Le Marmot qui rit in Chomedey has been transformed into a greener play space following the removal of 236 square metres of asphalt.
The new area was inaugurated on September 17 by CANOPÉE and the daycare. More than 100 plants, including several trees, were added to increase shade and reduce paved surfaces.
The project also includes natural play structures, child-sized furniture and different areas for outdoor play and exploration, according to a CANOPÉE release issued September 18.
236 square metres of asphalt removed
The transformation began in 2025, when 236 square metres of asphalt were manually removed during a community de-paving activity.
Work continued in spring 2026 with the planting of more than 100 plants.
According to CANOPÉE, the goal is to create more shade, reduce heat associated with paved surfaces and improve rainwater infiltration.
“The process allowed us to design, together with the CPE team, an environment that gives children many opportunities to move, explore, play and develop daily contact with nature in every season,” said Enrico Asselin, greening project manager at CANOPÉE.
Plants also used for learning
The vegetation was selected in part for its educational potential.
Raspberry bushes, blueberry plants, lavender and barley were added so children can observe, touch and smell different plants. Some may also be incorporated into educational activities.
“This new development fits fully with our desire to join the Grandir en nature movement, which aims to multiply opportunities for learning and discovery outdoors,” said Lorena Munoz, executive director of CPE Le Marmot qui rit.
Community project
CANOPÉE says daycare staff, parents, residents, elected officials and members of the organization participated at different stages of the project.
The work was carried out through the third phase of the Sous les pavés program, which supports the replacement of paved surfaces with greener spaces.
The Laval project received financial support from the Quebec government through the Action-Climat Québec program. The broader Sous les pavés initiative also receives financial support from TD Bank Group.
CANOPÉE is a Laval organization active in conservation, environmental education and urban tree planting.
