Nourrir d’abord: Laval food security organization adopts new name as needs rise

A Laval-based community organization focused on food security has officially rebranded as Nourrir d’abord, marking what it describes as a strategic shift to better reflect growing needs across the region.
The organization, formerly known as Enfant d’abord, announced the change on April 22 as it enters its 26th year of operations, according to information provided by the organization.
A response to evolving needs
Founded in 2000 in Chomedey, the organization initially focused on providing snacks to children in schools. Over time, it expanded its services to include food assistance, urban agriculture and education on food autonomy.
Today, its activities extend across Laval, where food insecurity is affecting a broader segment of the population.
According to projections from Laval’s public health authorities cited by the organization, approximately one in four residents may be living in a household experiencing food insecurity, representing about 122,000 people.
Expanding services across Laval
Nourrir d’abord reports serving nearly 875 clients monthly and distributing more than 6,900 food baskets annually.
The organization also manages several urban agriculture initiatives, including:
- more than seven community, collective or educational gardens
- over 27 workshops offered
- more than 400 participants
- approximately 597 kilograms of vegetables harvested
- over 100 volunteers involved
These programs aim to support both immediate food needs and long-term autonomy.
A name aligned with mission
According to executive director Édith Athus, the new name reflects a clearer understanding of the organization’s role.
She stated that the rebranding recognizes how food insecurity has evolved in Laval and reinforces the organization’s commitment to addressing it.

Community and political presence at launch
The official unveiling brought together about 50 participants, including community partners and public officials such as Aline Dib, who attended as a representative of the mayor.
Representatives from provincial offices and local organizations were also present, alongside volunteers and partners.
Continued fundraising efforts
The organization also confirmed it will again act as the regional partner for the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign in Laval from April 28 to May 3.
According to the organization, the initiative raised approximately $79,000 last year to support its activities.
Looking ahead
With its new identity, Nourrir d’abord says it aims to strengthen its visibility, expand its reach and continue addressing food insecurity through a combination of food distribution, education and community-based initiatives.
