Cyclovia returns to Laval on October 4 with car-free streets and family activities
Laval’s Cyclovia will return for a second edition on October 4, with sections of Cartier Boulevard and du Bon-Pasteur Boulevard temporarily closed to motor vehicles for a day focused on active transportation.
The event is organized by the Conseil régional de l’environnement de Laval (CRE de Laval) and the City of Laval following what organizers described as strong participation during the first edition.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., residents will be invited to use the closed streets by bicycle, roller skates, scooters or other forms of active transportation.
Sections of two boulevards will be closed to cars
For the event, Cartier Boulevard will be closed to motorized traffic between Breton and Legrand, while du Bon-Pasteur Boulevard will be closed between Cartier and Laurier.
The event is free and open to families. Organizers say the site is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs and that the Cyclovia will take place rain or shine.
Participants are asked to bring the equipment needed for the activity they wish to practise.
Cycling activities planned throughout the day
The program will include an introduction to cycling for children, a bicycle mechanics workshop, historical bicycle demonstrations, a bike-powered smoothie activity and a cycling rally.
Other recreational and educational activities are also planned.
According to organizers, the event is intended to encourage residents to explore active transportation while rediscovering the neighbourhood and meeting members of the community.
Organizers want to build cycling culture in Laval
Marie-Ève Dontigny, interim executive director of the CRE de Laval, said the first edition showed there was interest in cycling in the city.
“The first edition of Cyclovia showed us that there is real interest in cycling in Laval,” Dontigny said in a statement.
She added that the organization sees cycling not only as a recreational activity, but also as a means of transportation linked to public health, household finances and the ecological transition.
“With this second edition and an expanded program, we want to encourage even more Laval residents to integrate cycling into their daily trips and, little by little, help develop a real cycling culture in Laval,” she said.
