Federal infrastructure funding aims to support homeownership opportunities in Quebec

Credit government of Canada

Federal funding announced last week could help municipalities build the infrastructure needed for new residential developments, with the goal of increasing housing supply and supporting homeownership opportunities across Quebec.

According to a press release issued by Alfred-Pellan MP Angelo Iacono, the federal government has introduced a new component of the Water Infrastructure Funding Program for Housing Development (FIERH), backed by up to $955 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund.

The funding is intended to help municipalities finance essential infrastructure, including water and wastewater systems, required to support the construction of new neighbourhoods and housing projects.

Supporting growing communities

In the release, Iacono said the initiative is particularly relevant for growing communities such as Alfred-Pellan, where housing demand continues to increase.

He noted that investing in municipal infrastructure is an important step toward creating additional housing opportunities for families and first-time homebuyers.

“Homeownership remains an important goal for many families in our community. By investing in the infrastructure that makes new housing possible, we are creating more opportunities for residents while helping build strong communities for the future,” Iacono said.

Infrastructure tied to housing growth

According to the federal announcement, municipalities will be able to use the funding to complete infrastructure projects that support residential construction, helping prepare land for future housing developments.

The initiative is part of broader efforts by the federal government to work with municipalities and provincial partners to address housing challenges and increase the supply of homes across Quebec.

The announcement states that these investments are expected to support the development of housing projects intended for families and first-time buyers while helping communities accommodate future population growth.
