The City of Laval officially unveiled the 2026 Exceptional Citizens of Laval on Wednesday, January 21, as part of the celebrations marking the 78th anniversary of the Fleurdelisé, Quebec’s national flag since its official adoption in 1948.

Each year, this recognition highlights Lavallois who stand out for their remarkable commitment to the community, whether through civic involvement, volunteer work, or social, cultural or environmental initiatives. The 2026 honourees reflect the values of solidarity, pride and active citizenship that shape Laval’s collective life.

Honoured citizens for 2026

Claire Varin
A respected writer and researcher, Claire Varin holds a PhD in literature and is widely known for her scholarly work on author Clarice Lispector. Deeply involved in Laval’s cultural scene, she previously led the Société littéraire de Laval and founded the Fondation lavalloise des lettres in 2004 to promote local literary creation. She is the author of several award-winning novels, including Désert désir.

François Tardif
A prolific children’s author with more than 45 novels to his name, François Tardif also has a strong background in theatre and screenwriting. He left a lasting mark on Quebec’s cultural landscape by founding Le théâtre du p’tit loup and by writing the television series Une faim de loup. In addition to his creative work, he runs his own publishing house, Éditions du Petit monde.

Jocelyne Frédéric-Gauthier (posthumous tribute)
A historic political figure in Laval, Jocelyne Frédéric-Gauthier was the first person of Haitian origin to serve on the municipal council, representing the district of Auteuil from 2013 to 2025. She was also the first woman to chair the board of the Société de transport de Laval (STL). Remembered for her deep social commitment and warm smile, she passed away in November 2025.

Jean-Jacques Lapierre
A former municipal councillor for the Concorde–Bois-de-Boulogne district, Jean-Jacques Lapierre is also a well-known figure in local media. He produced and hosted more than 200 hours of programming for Laval television (TVRL/Vox), contributing significantly to community broadcasting.

Celebrating engagement and identity

According to the City, the ceremony was held in a spirit of gathering and celebration, underscoring the importance of recognizing those who contribute, often behind the scenes, to the well-being of the community. Holding the event on the anniversary of the Fleurdelisé was a deliberate choice, highlighting the connection between local civic engagement and Quebec’s broader identity.

By honouring these inspiring individuals, Laval aims to encourage citizen participation and to remind residents that individual commitment remains a key driver of the city’s social and community vitality.
