“Sous les pavés” Project Transforms a Chomedey Daycare Yard into a Greener Space

A group of volunteers gathered on october 21th for a festive community event in Chomedey to help transform the paved yard of CPE Le Marmot qui rit into a greener, cooler, and more inviting play space.

Led by CANOPÉE as part of the Sous les pavés initiative, the group removed 218 m² of unused asphalt from the property, which will soon be replaced with trees, shrubs, and natural play structures. The transformation aims to reduce heat-island effects, improve rainwater management, and create a healthier, more pleasant outdoor area for children and staff.

“Fifteen trees of various species have already been planted, and the site will soon include shrubs, perennials, and urban furniture,” said Enrico Asselin, Greening Project Manager at CANOPÉE. “It’s a project we’re extremely proud of, as it directly advances our mission of expanding Laval’s urban forest.”

Lorena Muñoz, Director of the daycare, emphasized the benefits for both children and educators:

“Beyond the environmental impact, this redesign will offer a healthier, more enjoyable space—perfectly aligned with our Growing in Nature approach, which we’ll highlight at the site’s official opening next spring.”

The project is part of Phase 3 of Sous les pavés, funded by the Government of Quebec through the Action-Climat Québec program, coordinated by the Fonds d’action québécois pour le développement durable. Additional support comes from TD Bank Group through its Ready Commitment program.
